The handshake

6"x 9"

Graphite, colored pencil, and black pen

I saw a pirate when I first saw the paper, I think the purity of the black of the inkblot was intriguing, so I decided I would give it an opposite. Without even really meaning to I think I created a sort of progressive interpretation.  As if we have a white person and a black person, which could mean their literal race, or it could simply signify that they are drastically different in one way or another.  And these two people are shaking hands which I think signifies some kind of agreement on something, whether it be a bet or the end of a war. Then lastly I think the little colored designs are just me doodling, but also they could signify some kind of aura that is happening. Like if there is some disagreement or heat between these two people that could be shown through the flames, maybe they have a growing relationship which is shown in the little vines.  And a calmness is being set upon this world after this phase of their relationship, this is shown through the small moon phases with the lotus flower.

Obviously the inkblot was black ink, I chose to use a HB graphite pencil because I am  familiar with the way that applies color. Then I added some 4B graphite in the darker areas just to give some more dramatic shadows. I chose to outline the whole thing in black pen so that it accentuated the shadows even more, and gave the drawing a crisper look. Finally, I added some color to the little side doodles just to kind of play with that idea of selected color, and to give some feeling and accent to the drawing.

When I picked up a piece of paper with na ink blot on it, I thought "ok, I can work with this." Then I spotted another another one that I just saw the head of a pirate, I said that and my friend who was standing next to me laughed at me because she didn't see what I did which is what I find interesting  about this assignment. Anyway, I saw this black head of a pirate, I wasn't sure what to add to that, so I thought about color.  The ink blot was a deep black, so I thought " maybe I could make another pirate in white to contrast it," so that's what I tried, and I'm honestly pretty happy with how it turned out.
