Regal Wood Ducks
9"x 12"
Colored Pencil on Drawing Paper
The idea behind this project was to draw one species of duck as best and most accurately as possible. I chose to draw the wood duck and I wanted to show it's habitat really well and I felt like a good way of doing that would be to put them standing on a log since they usually are inhabitants of swampy wooded areas. I added both a male and a female to show all the different colors and to make the ducks seem more alive since they were together and would seem like they were interacting with each other.
I used colored pencil for this project so that I could get as much detail as possible and get very precise with colors and textures. I used this material also because I was very able to manipulate the colored pencil which I don't feel as sure about in other materials, I feel very in control with colored pencil.
I started with research on the species and looked at what kind of habitat they lived in so that I could draw rthem accurately. Then I watched several videos and scrolled through images online of this species so that I could get a full picture of what the species looked like and how it acted. I then made several sketches where I tried to make the ducks facing eachother and one where the female was preening but all of then looking wrong and I was running out of time so I ended up making them just facing the same way.
