Yikes!
Gelli print with washable markers, marker, pen on drawing paper
9"x 6"
The idea behind the project of whatchmaDRAWit is to take a silly prompt and turn it into a drawing using creativity to fill in the details. My prompt was to draw a person with a huge nose and a really silly smile. With the gelli print I had made, this prompt seemed to fit with the shapes I had on my paper already, with some dots and squares for eyes and cheeks. I wanted to make the nose really dramatic and make it the center of attention to the viewer. I then wanted the smile to be a super silly smile like when you purposefully smile too big. Unfortunately it looks more like a wince, hence the name "yikes!"
I began with a gelli print of washable markers, because it helps to fill up the background which I often struggle with. I picked colors I liked and tried to make it look almost childlike in the background with many noticeable marks, and purposefully coloring just a little outside the lines. I then decided to use markers and pen for the rest of it because I thought that it would not only show up the best, but create even more of that color contrast and deep colors that gave it a childlike feel.
I started with the gelli print which I had never used before, it felt really funny to touch because it was all rubbery and kind of fell all over the place. After printing on the paper, I realized that it came out a lot darker than what I was expecting, so I was worried many of the prompts wouldn't show up properly, especially if I added a lot of detail. I had to look through almost all the prompts before I found one that seemed like it would fit the background I had already created. I then used pen to make outlines, and pencil to sketch out the shapes of the face. I then used the markers I tested for color to shade in the sketch.
