For this assignment the goal was to create a 3D sculpture out of plaster hand forms. To make something else out of your hands. The idea of this was to have one hand look like it was a braid and the other just kind of looked like something. I wanted to make it look like the first hand was braiding something that wrapped around the second one as if it was strangeling it.

To create this we used alginate molds then filled then with plaster to make the sculpture of the hand. Then I used sculpey clay to make the braid.

First we mixed up the alginate mold materials by mixing together the mold powder and luke warm water in a small bucket. Once it was well mixed and smooth, I put my hands in it in the position I wanted and let them sit there for a couple of minute to harden the mold. Then I took my hand out and poured in the plaster. After a couple hours that had hardened and we could peel away the alginate. I wanted to create a black braid to wrap around from one hand to the other.  I used sculpy clay, it was bent on a specific position and so I couldn't bake it because I wasn't sure if I could bake the plaster, and it certainly would not fit in the clay oven. As it aired out, the sculpy clay began to crack so I quickly photographed it before it broke completely then just put back the sculpy. I also didn't know if I could paint the sculpy before it was baked.
