Artist Inspired Project

Our Own Lives

14"x 20"

Oil pastel and book pages on watercolor paper

In this artwork I was inspired by two artists and art movements. I was inspired by Andrea Bowers and her work about her beliefs for society and politics. I also took inspiration from the movement of impressionism where people did not draw things realistically, but instead they used color to portray just an impression of what they were drawing/painting.  In this work I wanted to show how many people think they look and how they feel they look and how that is thought to be bad, versus how we see people in magazines and celebrities online. We create unrealistic expectations for ourselves and anything other than that is ugly.

Not only do we say this to ourselves, but we also hear this from society as it feels they are always watching, hence the eyes. I drew these two bodies of women, one is the american beauty standard with beautiful wings to sore above the threats and negativity with. And the other with devil horns only able to wolk around hurting and scaring those around them. I exaggerated features such as the thing waist and a thigh gap which are things often people are shamed for not having.

I chose to add bright colors more than skin tones to show that some bodies brightness can be tainted by what they are told by the world about their body.  At the bottom of the drawing is a mirror, but reflected in the mirror is an ugly image looking almost un human. This is what we do to ourselves when we hear what the standards are. We can no longer see that we are all beautiful and all have beautiful features. That uniqueness is a gift. we only see that out teeth are yellow, my cheeks are chubby, my face is uneven... on and on it goes.

The pages of the background show how what we think of ourselves os usually pre written. We don't have the time to choose how we veiw ourselves. As we grow up we have magazines telling us that we aren't the standard. We have friends saying that our noses are good. Other people are shaping how we see ourselves. And that makes us feel small out in a big world of other people. That is why I kept the outline of the trees behing the drawing. And why I shadowed the outlines of the pages. To show that most of us are many pages and we have to be dealt with carefully otherwise the book will fall to the ground.

I put the drawing seemingly upside down except for one eye and an eyebrow. This is on purpose to show that all the comments go to our head just like blood goes to your head when you are turned upside down.
