Lipstick on pastel paper
I wanted to play with the idea of beauty standards in this project. I thought that lipstick would be similar to oil pastels in many ways and thought that it would connect well to my inquiry. I wanted to play with proportion as well as perspective. Many of my projects have been really straight on and so I thought playing with a larger camera lense and then trying to transfer that onto paper could be really cool. I wanted to show through this piece how although makeup is meant to make you look more "beautiful", you can make something silly out of it as well.
I used lipstick for this project because it is a makeup product that so many people use because they feel insecure in themselves. I wanted to utilize that in a way that maybe was not so beautiftul by making it less serious. However the materials still relates to the idea of changing your appearance to not only please society but please yourself.
I started by trying to pick out what colors and brands of lipstick to buy at CVS. I went with the cheapest one I could find, which was not all that cheap actually which is why I ended up only buying three colors. I tried to get a wide variety of tones while sticking to one general pallette. I then went on to taking the perfect refarance photo. There is a whole burst of photos in my phone of my in silly poses, but I landed on one specific one because it looked very unserious. I then sketched out my design with pencil then went in with the darket to lighter colors of lipstick and blending at the end. However my one issue is that the lipstick is so oily it reminds me of the oil paint sticks so it's really hard to get detail. They also never dry, they will always be wet oil, and as you can see the oil soaked into the page.
