Eyes
2" x 4" (each)
Watercolor on bisque fired clay
The idea behind this work was to make a more artistic and less realistic rendition of my SI #12, where I cyanotype printed people's eyes. I wanted one of the pieces to keep that similar blue color to show the direct correlation between the projects, but the other one I chose more realistic colors. I wanted to show a similar idea to the printed one, how people all have different reactions and feelings towards not only music as a whole, but certain songs and sounds. I used the facial expressions that I saw in my printed cyanotype and attempted to recreate them in three dimensions.
I decided to use clay because I've seen watercolor painted on clay before, and it looks really cool, especially because of how deep the colors get, and how very matte it looks. I thought that this texture was almost similar to that of cyanotype because of how much the color soaked into the surface. I wasn't expecting the colors (especially on the second one) to be as vibrant as they ended up being, which was really cool.
I started by looking at all my old projects to try to see how I could build off of the ideas that I had already had to create new work. I took inspiration from my SI #12, which was a cyanotype print of several different people's eyes. I first made a sketch, as well as using my sketch from the previous project, to try to get the proportions correct when I was forming the clay. I started with a slab, and then added the eyes. When it looked really flat, I decided to add on some more topography where the cheekbones and eyebrows would be, which made it look more realistic. They came out of the kiln at separate times, and the first one, I just started with the blue eyes, but decided to make the whole thing blue to connect more to the cyanotype. However, I wanted to make the second one have more realistic colors, as I wanted this project to progress and move forward from the previous one, rather than staying in the same area.
