Acrylic Paint on Ceramic Plate
With this project I wanted to experiment with really directly related materials. I felt like drawing people that the colors of their cloths were the thing that stood out most, was a way to experiment with how people looked at bodies, while not having that be the focus. I also I made it so the figures have different skin tones and different body shapes to show diversity of body shapes.
I used a plate to continue with the idea of food and eating and how that contributes significantly to how I see myself, and how people see others. I wanted to make all the figures a variety of shapes and colors so that it showed some diversity while they still all conformed to mini waist and really thin legs and arms. However the plate kind of shows how everyone eats, yet people still all look different.
I started with a sketch of my idea and just some general shapes of what I was thinking for the people and their shapes and positions. I then moved on to tracing the plate onto a piece of drawing paper so that I had the real sizes of the circles so that I could plan out the shapes and positions and quantity of my people figures. I then started with a white paint so that when I added color it would not be so transparent. However, when I added color, the white showed around the edges in some places. The figures are not quite as distict from the plate as I had hoped, but the colors pop enough. I also took pretty big inspiration from the colors and shapes from Jacob Lawrence's migration series.
