Beautiful Oops

Playground in the Sea

Multimedia on watercolor paper

The idea behind this project is to turn a "mistake" into something beautiful. I wanted to make a jellyfish, but I didn't just want a random jellyfish in the middle of the page, so I added some fish and plants to give some context and build the setting. I tried to go for a childish, aetherial sort of look, not everything is super accurate, but it looked like cute little fish, and jellyfish with long, flowing tentacles.

To draw the sketch, I used graphite pencil. I sketched out everything, I sketched the outlines of the plants, the fish, and the jellyfish. Then I went over most of the lines with a sharpie pen to solidify the shapes. I then went back in and erased all the graphite just revealing the pen. After that, I used watercolors to add color, then went in with colored pencil to add depth and a little bit more value.

I started by drawing the tenticles off of the jellyfish, just to get a sence of houw big the whole thing was going to be. Then after that, I drew a very straight filled in section of fish, but once I took a step back and looked at it, it looked weird so I erased the fish line and tried to make them a little bit more spread out so it looked more natural. I then added some fish at the bottom to make things a bit more crowded and playful. Then I added the vegetation on the bottom; I didn't really know what sea vegetation looked like by heart so I had to look uo a picture of some different kinds of sea plants and go based off of that. Then I looked up a picture of beta fish and used that for reference for my more fancy looking fish. Then I erased the graphite, added pen and watercolor!
