Midterm: Circle Project

A Day in the Sky

9"x 12"

Gouache paint on Bristol

The assignment was to simply create an art piece with twenty circles in a four by five format. When I heard the assignment I kept thinking of progressions, like the growing of a plant or the rising of the sun so that's what I went with. I wanted to show mostly the sunrise and sunset since that is more interesting than eighteen blue circles with one colorful one at each end. even when I was mostly finished the blue circled seemed boring so I added some white clouds to them.

I used bristol paper because it is sturdy and thick, it was perfect because I wasn't sure what materials I was going to use and bristol os pretty suitable for anything. I picked out my paper, and then once I had come up with my idea I thought that gouache would work perfectly because I could have that solid paint look, but in my sunset and sunrise I would be able to still blend it with water. I didn't really end up using water too much as that did pill the bristol and also I liked how the paint looked when it was thickly blended together.

I started by just drawing my circles on the paper. I had no idea really at all what I was going to do, but I picked out a size that would fill the whole paper so that I didn't have to work too small. I then had my idea to do a progression of the sky overtime, and I picked out my material because of the smoothness of the paint. I hadn't finished it by the end of the class period so I had to take it home and add some final details.Â
