Mapping design

Path of the day

The point of the assignment was to take our everyday path and turn it into a cohesive piece of art. I tried to take the path from my mom's to school, to ballet, to my dad's and turn that into a sort of map design. I used a character to make the map seem like more of a designed scene, then added notable features of each place to make it seem like more of a cohesive map that was interesting and caught the onlookers eye. I then added a background which I'm not sure really works with the foreground since the mountains don't follow the path all the way so it looks like the path just launches into the sky.

I used all graphite pencil to sketch out all of the road and all the small details in the foreground to make sure I got the proportions right and coulf it all that I wanted in the space that I had. I then went over and outlined things with gel pen and filled in some with the black oen to puch my contrast. After that I used markers to fill in all my small details, then watercolors to add in the background. I'm not sure if the gel pen was my best material choice since as soon as I put the watercolor over it it bled and smeared all over the place which ruined my sharp defined lines and made everything a little more fuzzy and blended which certainly was not what I was going for.

I started by just looking at a map of southern Maine and just trying to generalize what my oath would look like, but that proved difficult to visualize so I used Google My Maps to plot points at all of my destinations and then drew a line of my driving route between them. This ended up being a perfect Z that looked cool so I used that as the base for my map. i used google maps a few times as a source for the shapes of ponds and the general appearance of a canoe.
