Connecting Sounds

Fusing glass
The idea behind this work was to revise the ideas from my SI #3, On The Sea, as I really didn't like how that project came out. The SI #3, however, was from a different inquiry question about how humans interact with the ocean as opposed to my current inquiry, which is about my and others' connection to music. The idea for SI #3 was about connectivity and privilege, which I thought I could weave into my theme of music. I had made a previous work (SI # 13) that was about how music connected the jumbled thoughts that were in my head. I really liked the color and patterns of that one, since it was about connectivity, I thought I could make some kind of expansion of that project.
I wanted to emphasize the background and pattern since I often struggle with doing a background, and I like playing with patterns and colors. I wanted to use the idea of connectivity from SI #13 and #3 to re-envision SI #3. I thought that glass would be good because it would have bright colors like SI #13 and have that collage look, but from what I've seen of other glass work, it bleeds into itself a bit, making it different from collage.
I started by picking the SI that I wanted to revise. Once I had chosen #3, I thought about the ideas that I had behind the work that I could connect to my current inquiry and make a new project with the same ideas. I knew that I wanted to use glass because I had struggled with material synthesis this year and wanted to experiment with a new material. When I was looking through the glass materials, I saw a cup full of squares, which reminded me of when I was cutting out a bunch of squares for my collage. I used my collage color placement to inspire the color placement of the glass. Once it was fired, I really liked how the edges softened, and the colors didn't really mix together, but they filled in the gaps where the squares didn't quite line up.
