Holding my heart

18"x 18"

Watercolor and micron pen on watercolor paper

The idea behind this piece was to show the difference in what hands can do. This shows how the hands tell so much about a person. Some people use their hands to do bad which is shown through the strangling hand. Some people use their hands to nurture and bring good to the world. This is shown through the hand that is holding a heart and flowers. The heart represents the fact that when somebody is hurting one can almost hold their heart in their hands and take care of it, allowing it to bloom.

I used graphite pencil to sketch out the ideas. I used my phone to take the picture from which I copied the general shapes. After that, I used micron pen to draw designs inside the hands. I then used watercolors and different sized brushed to mix colors and paint in the lines that weren't already drawn in by the zentagle design.

I used my mom as a model for my photo. I had her pose, then took a photo. I then used that photo as reference for my painting. I started with the outline of the body and the hands. After that I used a photo off of the internet as a reference for an accurate heart shape. After all that had been drawn, I used photos of henna tattoos as inspiration for my zentagle design on the hands. I used watercolor to accurately add color to the body and show contrast to exaggerate that it was a male body. I was originally thinking of just having a woman with a shirt, but I had already drawn the arms without any sleeves so that wasn't possible. I decided to just make it a man's upper torso.
