CollageĀ
The idea behind this work was to capture the difference in every person, and make them bigger or smaller generally relating to how much our society values their voices. You can see for example that the woman with dark curly hair with dark skin is very small, and the woman with light features and just brown hair is quite large. I wanted to make them little puppets to make them seem like characters in a scene of the world.
I used collage for this project, I thought that it would relate because it would show how people are influenced by other people by pasting parts of pictures to make faces. I used Rolling Stone magazine so all the people are pretty famous and all their photos are beautiful and highly photoshopped but I sort of countered that by messing up the proportions a lot to make them look weird.
I started with an idea to make a portrait out of hole punches as you can see below both my pile of circles and the beginning of the project. However I realized after a couple hours that for one it would take me forever, just way too much time that I didn't have, and secondly the hole puncher I had didn't work very well so it was just making me really mad and it was the beginning so I knew that if I continued with this I'd just get more mad and end up giving up and it would look really bad. So I decided to stick with collage but I had had an idea for a previous SI about distorted collage faces and I liked that idea but when I started making them they were really small. So then decided that it would be cool to put them on sticks and make them puppets. A lot of the decisions and planning that went into the puppets was very on the spot.
