Pen, colored pencil, and black printing ink on drawing paper
The idea behind this work was to show how I am influenced by music nd I started with the idea about how that influences my connections with others or how what music I listen to is influenced by interactions with other people, but I feel like it ended up being more focused on my isolated relationship with music. I think as I created I began to dive deeper into myself and my own connection to music rather than it's connection to anyone else. I wanted to show how sometimes when I listen to music, the feeling just overcomes me whether it be happy, sad, or any other emotion, I can definitely becomes consumed by the music and the feeling it gives me in a specific moment. Something I also experimented with in this project was my own style. I have drawn these kind of squiggly people as doodles for a while now and have really enjoyed it, so I wanted to expand on that since I was getting a little bit annoyed at trying to draw realistically.
I began with a graphite sketch and then I went over the portrait of myself with an ink pen. I used ink pen because it felt the most familiar to me in these sorts of figures because when I draw them in my notebooks, that's often what I use. Since I was just starting out with refining those figures I wanted to stick to that familiar material. I then used a guitar string that I coated in black printing ink to make marks on the paper. The guitar string itself is pretty self explanitory in its connection with music. I then used colored pencil for the colors because they vere vibrant while still being precise and not overshadowing the ink marks.
I started by thinking about what I wanted to. I was having a really hard time, and so I just started doodling the little squiggle figures that I often will doodle when I'm bored or trying to think. After drawing a couple of them I decided to do something with them in my next project. I was going to try to do something with ginkgo leves to connect to the one before, but as I was listening to my music I found that i was really drawn into the souds so I decided to just draw that, because that what was coming to my mind. I started by just sketching the figure from my head, which is different from my usual process since I often do things based at least somewhat off of realistic shapes so I often have to take reference images before I begin, but this time everything was totally freehand. Also, when I was coloring in the guitar lines with pencil, I listened to music, in hopes of letting the music sway or guide my decisions in one way or another.
