collage
The idea behind this piece of art was to continue my investigation on how we see ourselves but also how we see others. This one built on the idea of what makes up a person, specifically me. I wanted to add myself into it as shown through the digital print outs and then add things that made me who I am. I also added elements of the face to my face to connect it to my previous SI which focused on distortion. These things in my collage are both things I myself have done or experienced, but also things that dictate who I am. For example the word media in the upper left hand corner, social media is a big player in how I see myself and has shaped so many people's perspectives. It is near a group of people watching, showing that the media always seems to be watching.
For this project I used mostly collage. I started with a photo of myself and used photoshop to make it into a design so that it was solid colors and wasn't simply just a photograph. I then used cut outs from a variety of different magazines. National geographic mostly but some from the seasonal Wesleyan magazine which had more photos of people in it. I used those and cut out the pictures I liked then glued them on and around my portraits.
I started with a sketch and I orginally wanted to do something different, something that connected more to my previous one. I was originally planning on doing a portrait of myself in a christmas ball so that it was all distorted, but I didn't have a christmas ball and didn't have time to acquire one, so I went with another idea that I had had of sort of a collage with really weird proportions. I didn't go completely with that but decided to go with the media of collage. I wanted to use myself as part of the art because that's a big part of my inquiry. I decided to use the photoshop because it would allow me to use myself while still blending it nicely with collage and looking like they belonged.
