Marker and pen on drawing paper
I started with a really rough sketch of an above blueprint of my house. It looked really strange at first because I actually had a surprisingly hard time pictureing what my house looked like from above, and where all the walls were and where closets made outcroppings in other rooms. I had to stop and think many times about what the house actually looked like. I started with a graphite outline, then went in with marker. I wanted to show with this, not only the logistical aspect, but also the feeling of the home, by replication the colors of many rooms and rugs.
I started with a graphite outline of the map because I knew that I would have to do a lot of erasing and redrawing. Once I had drawn the whole floor plan three or four times, and adjusted several rooms a couple times to make it more accurate. I then solidified all the shapes with a thin black pen so that it looked cleaner and more precise. When I had finished outlining, I filled in each shape with the colors that best matched that of the object that is actually in my home. I wanted it to look very design oriented rather than a more realistic look, and so the solid shading of markers, felt like the right choice.
I had to sit with my eyes closed for a while, thinking about what my house actually looks like, especially from a bird's eye view. I had a lot of trouble figuring out a couple specific walls, especially where the basement went down, and where a couple of closets resulted in a wall outcropping in another room. I had to get up and walk around my house a few times to make sure I got it right. I found this interesting because I have lived in this same house my entire life, so it was surprising to me that I didn't know the shapes off the top of my head.
