Blackberries
Ink and Blackberries on pastel paper
11" x 14"
The idea behind this work was to emphasize how I see myself in relation to food. I did two portraits of myself to expand my composition and to literally show myself looking at myself, almost like a mirror. I wanted to explore how food effects how I see myself and showed that through colors. Green often is associated with life and this face showed a healthier relationship woth food as opposed to the darker black one which represents the struggles. They are looking at each other without really much expression showing how they are different but both have hardships.
I used a fork to print ink onto pastel paper. I wanted to explore with a material that would connect directly to the idea. Since the main idea was food, I thought the use of a fork would allow me to experiment with mark making as well as connecting my idea to my project. I also used blackberries for the background and some of the colors in the foreground to finish up the background and sorto of connect the background into the subjects.
I started out with taking photos since I wanted to have a general idea where the light and dark areas of the piece were going to be. I then edited them so that the darks and lights were black and white and were really contrasted. I then sketched out the faces making sure to use the proper darknesses in the parts of the faces to get a simplified image of the shadows and highlights. I then took my final piece of paper and sketched the outlines of where about these different sections of various shades would be. Before starting the final I experimented with the marks I was going to make and made sure I understood how the fork and the ink would work together. After printing I needed to tie in a background while still making it look rleevant so I added blackberry prints and decided to put some around the cheeks and nose to pull the piece together
