Minor Mouse
4.75" x 6.75"
Colored Pencil on Watercolor Paper
The main idea of this piece was following my prompt which was "draw a piano with no black keys". At first this seemed boring because it would just be a board of white keys, but then I started to think about maybe why the black keys were gone and what had happened to them. That started to give me ideas of something to draw. I enjoyed brainstorming different ideas for the prompt. I thought of maybe the keys having fallen through the piano but decided it into a boy playing piano and a mouse has stolen all the black minor keys. I thought that it would be a funny and interesting image.
I used colored pencils for the final product. At first I made a sketch for generating ideas with just graphite in my notebook, then once I had come up with an idea and proportion I liked I sketched in with graphite on my final paper which turned out to be watercolor which I didn't know until I started and the colored pencil shading was very bumpy. I then erased the graphite lines as i replaced it with the colored pencil.
I started by making a very rough sketch just to get my ideas down on paper, and then once I started to transfer my sketch onto my final paper I looked up pictures of pianos as well as people playing pianos so that I could get the proportions of both the person and the piano correct. Once I started shading I had to take a picture of myself in the boys position to make sure that I got the wrinkles on the shirt accurate because my previous rough sketch didn't look quite right. I also had to look up specifically a wooden piano so that I could see how the grain and colors of the wood worked.
