The idea behind this competition was to create a piece of art that conveyed a warning as to why people, especially teens, should not drive distracted. I wanted to show the consequences that not only occur for the driver, but also for the others around the driver when someone drives distracted. I do ballet, and so I wanted to incorporate that somehow into my art. I also wanted to try something new, as I wasn't feeling up to making a drawing or writing. I wanted to make it a bit humorous so that it appealed to young adults, but I also wanted to get the message across clearly.
For this project, I wanted to try film because I haven't really tried to make a movie like this since I was in middle school. I do dance all the time, so it made sense for me to include the dance aspect and make it kind of unique. I also thought that film might be the most jarring and have the most impact, as it builds a relationship with the viewer and then is very quick in the whole crash situation.
I came up with the idea when I was driving home from ballet, because I had been told it could be cool to include dance, but I wasn't really sure how to include it. I had to film each clip twice because the first time I filmed half of it vertically, which didn't fit in the format I needed. The second time, I also wore a brighter leotard, because in the first take I wore black and it was hard to see me. I had to retake all of the sections because it was a different time of day, so I thought it would look weird if half were one lighting and the other half was another lighting. After everything had been filmed, it took a really long time to put together and edit the film. I knew editing took a while, but it surprised me how much time I spent just tweaking milliseconds of the video to make it fit just right.
