The idea behind this peice was again to make something beautiful but also useful. I feel that often beautiful artwork does not have an everyday use, it just hangs on the walls collecting dust. So I created this head as a pot. The head is hollow and does not have a top so that one can plant a plant inside it and it makes almost the idea of hair.
I used clay to make the base of the form. I started with just a lump of clay and built and built in into the head from there using water and different clay tools. Then once the clay had been fired I used watercolor paints and paintbrushes to apply the color.
I started with simply a lump of clay, then I began to mold it upwards, starting over several times because it was too big, or too thing, or the wrong shape. But then eventually I got it to a shape I liked and began to make the general shape of the head. Then I cut out parts and reapplied clay to create the facial features, using tools but mostly my fingers to create the shapes. Once most has been finished I began to add clay in the places that needed to be added, such as the cheekbones and jawline. Then once it was fired I added some exaggerated colors.
