How can fashion designs be more inclusive of all body types?
8"x 4"
Yarn, thread, and marker on bristol
The idea behind this piece was my inquiry question "How can fashion be more inclusive of all body types?" I think that in the fashion industry larger sizes are not advertised very much. When clothing is modeled usually the models are slender women who are photoshopped to look ideal but really the "dream body" is not reachable. I think that also not only the industry itself but the clothing that is made is always built to accentuate a woman's curves. There is often some kind of draw in or belt along the waste or below the chest. I took this and used part of this but also reversed part of it. I still drew the dress in slightly below the breast area more for support even than looks, but then instead of the waist area being curved in, it os belled out in the opposite direction so that it is still a beautiful dress but also it reveals that even when the waist area is not accentuated, an item of clothing can still be beautiful.
I used yearn, thread, and marker for this project. I used the yarn as the material to create the design because it directly relates to my overarching question which includes fashion. Yarn is very often used in the designing and making of clothing so I thought though my design is on paper, it would still connect well to my inquiry. Thread is also a common product in the fashion industry, probably even more so than yarn so I decided to stitch through my design. As much as the paper just seems like a structural base, all designs in fashion must start somewhere and many times that place is a sketch on paper. I used pencils and markers to create the basic human shape so as to add context to my design.
I started with my idea generation sketches which were inspired by the lack of representation of all body shapes on not only social media but in all forms of advertisement around the world. Then from my sketches I drew my general shape onto some bristol paper and used a hot glue gun to glue strips of yarn I had cut onto the sketch so that it reoresented my design. I did this until the whole dress was filled with yarn. I then erased my sketch lines and added a simple person with marker to add context. At the end of gluing all the yarn onto the design a lot of yarn wasn't staying down, and some areas looked messy, so to fix this, I stitched over it in a strategic and aestetic was so as to both compliment the structure and composition of the project and also the look.
