Connection
20" x 29"
The idea behind this work was to create a sense of connection between very different ideas, colors, and vibes into one coherent piece. I wanted this to represent how music feels to me in my head. I have Vivaldi, Travis Scott, Tate McRae, and Andrew Bird all in my head. So many of my favorite songs are so different from each other, but somehow they all fit into that narrow slot of songs that I like, so they have that in common. When I think of a quilt, that's also kind of how I feel. It feels like a bunch of scraps that someone was drawn to, and so they put them together to make something comprehensive.
For this project, collage felt like it made the most sense with my idea of putting unalike parts together into one comprehensive work. I think in general that's what collage is often all about, and so that felt perfect for this project. I was able to cut out squares of patterns that I liked from magazines, mimicking the process one may follow to patch together a quilt. I hope to extend this work by sewing a pattern on top of it with a sewing machine.
I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do with this project at all, but I had heard a lot of people saying that they wanted to work on collage, and that inspired me as well to work on that. Since I didn't have any idea what I wanted my end product to look like, I just started by grabbing scissors and an art magazine and got to cutting out my favorite colors and patterns. After cutting out the first rectangle and many of the patterns I liked, being small square images, I decided to cut everything into squares and rectangles and make a quilt-type situation. I had so much fun, though, just going through a bunch of magazines and hunting for little snippets of images as well as full images of paintings that could look good together in a big collage. I then took about half an hour arranging and rearranging all my images in a way that I liked. I didn't have time to glue them all then, so I had to take a picture and copy that as I glued them later on. When I glued everything, it didn't line up the same way as when I had laid it out on the table, where there were gaps and things. When I glued everything, I had to improvise and reorganize a lot as it had to change due to spacing and alignment.
