For the clay turtle, I wanted to create a tortoise like sculpture with unique sgraffito. The idea was to make it look like the ordinary turtle with regular turtle with something like a flower crown, or sash across it's back, and a few sprinkled on top of the head. I wanted to create a more joyful feel for this one and give it kind of a springy vibe.

For this sculpture I used clay. I used it because it was not only what the assignment was, but also because it is the easiest to carve for sgraffito. Though it mold well and if fairly simple to work with, it always had to be hallow which can sometimes be tricky.

I started with a ball of clay and began to hollow it out and shape it into the turtle's stomach, then I made another and attach it to make the shell. I continued to make these hollow shapes and attach them to make the shape of a turtle. Then I smoothed out the clay, painted it with underglaze and began to scratch off the underglaze to reveal the white clay underneath and create my design.
