Herons
18" x 24"
Colored Pencil and Ink on Bristol Paper
The idea behind this work was to show a solution to climate changfe. I wanted to show that by emphasizing the beauty and complexity of nature and prioritizing that over the boring and tedious looking graphs. The graphs all show climate change in one way or another, some are CO2 emissions per country per year, some are temperature and many other things connected to climate change. Then the birds are great blue herons which are stunningly complex and have so much variation in their feathers and texture. I thought that the contrast between the two elements would be really interesting. I put the herons on top of the graphs to get out the understanding that a solution to climate change is valuing the beauty of nature.
I used colored pencil and ink pen for this project. I thought the ink pen would work well for small lines and precise deatils in the data such as numbers and very small words. It is also all black so it is rather bland and does not distract too much from the foreground. I used colored pencil for the birds in order to get super detailed precision and striking colors.
I started with the graphs so I had to do a lot of looking up graphs and looking at what they represented so i didn't repeat the same graph more than one or two times. I looked up the kinds of graphs I wanted as I needed them and tried to get a wide variety of shapes. I tried to make the lines straight and be fairly accurate but I wasn't too worried about being exactly precise since the data itself wasn't the main focus it was more the idea. I then used many different photos of great blue herons to draw the birds.
