Oil Pastel and Chalk Pastel on pastel paper
The idea behind this piece was to create a face that was not proportional but to use my own face as a referance. often when I draw my own face I unintentionally draw things not how they really are because I try to "fix" them to make them look how I think they look. By drawing myself from a distorted picture to begin with it allows me to really focus on simply drawing exactly what I see.
I used oil pastel for a majority of this work because I feel like it captures contour and gives really vibrant colors. I think also when drawing things unrealistically I like it to be really colorful so it's like there is at least one aspect of "beauty" which is why those super vibrant colors tend to lead me to use them.
I started by photographing myself in the christmas ball, but I couldn't get a close enough photo that was focused and without my phone covering my face. I eventually asked my mom to help me. I then used my face to draw the subject, but I had a lot of extra space so I decided to tie back into my first couple and add some dancers. This idea of the people also came from the proportions of my mom in the picture as well.
