The idea behind this work was to show all the things as a dance I am told to change. Some of them are good and of course are constructive, since changing is the only way to improve. But some days it feels like I can't do anything right and I'm just trying to change everything. With this piece I added a bunch of correction phrases that are common, to show that Idea of having to change everything. As well as common corrections I added other things like quotes from rejection letters I've gotten "sorry, not accepted" although I didn't have room to add the accepted. Then I also added things I think about myself and can only assume other think as well such as "too short".
For the image of myself I used a picture my mom took of me, then I put it into photoshop and just got the general colors and put those in. I wanted it to be very design based and not very drawing like so I made sure there were only a few colors in the entire form. For example, if I had gone by every pixel, the leotard would have been many many colors, but I chose a general color and used that for the whole thing. I then printed out the alphabet in a bunch of different collage fonts and cut out the letter I needed. I used embroidery thread to stitch the box of the point show and connect to the background by stitching the letters onto the paper. I used thread because often times people will darn their pointe shows to make them easier to stand on. I did the stitch that you would use for darning around the box of the shoe, and continued with the string from there. For the background I made a lot of little Xs, this is because to make the floor in a studio or on stage you would put a little tape X for the center mark.
I started by putting my pointe shoes and leotard on and sitting on my bed for about half an hour trying to think what to do. I wanted to play with perspective while still connecting strongly to my overarching question. I had my mom take a bunch of pictures, then went back to pondering, and this process repeated several times. I finally found a decent photo in the mix and decided to draw over it with photoshop. I then printed it out, but the printer I was trying to use kept making the whole thing different colors of pink. I had to print it on bristol so that I could sew, but I wasn't sure if the normal printer could do that. I tried it anyway since the other one was making weird colors, and it worked! I then sewed onto the pointe shoe. For the background I needed to connect to the subject and I had enjoyed sewing on the shoe so I decided to continue sewing.
