The idea behind this work was to create a work that showed how passions or activities that a person enjoys, can impact their interactions with other people. I wanted to exaggerate the faces because the idea was the interactions and so I wanted to emphasize the relationship between the two people shown through the faces of the girls.
I started with charcoal because I thought it would create strong base that would show through other materials, but it's black and white so it doesn't take away from the other aspects of the piece. I then used pen to make the faces which I thought would be a good material to make the faces exaggerated and it wouldn't crete a fully filled in drawing so that I could add color later. I then added mesh to the tutus so that it connected to my idea.Â
I started with a sketch and was originally going to do a rectangle piece with just a ballet studio in the background. After drawing the people with charcoal I wasn't sure how to make the background realistic while still making the people stand out. I also was originally just going to do regular faces, but I wanted to add some color and also I was kind of done using charcoal as well as the fact that I wanted to make sure that the faces were the focal point of the piece. So I drew the faces, and then decided to just cut out the people so that I didn't have to draw a background and to also show the feeling that when you're talking to a friend sometimes it feels like there's nothung else around you. I then added the mesh to enhance the piece and connect it directly to my inspiration. After looking at it for a while I began to notice the dull and undetailed background and decided to used a photograph of my dance studio as background because I dislike drawing backgrounds and I thought it would be a cool material addition.
