Intayon: Remembering Coney Island and Affirming the Igorot Spirit

A multi-speaker sound installation/live performance based on the Filipino Human Zoos of Coney Island and other World's Fairs across America. Bontoc Igorots were kept as displays of primitivism and justification for American imperialism in the Philippines. "Intayon" is a phrase of calling the spirit back to the body and a call to return home. The experience of the installation aims to reverse the forced performative primitivism of the Igorot exhibit by subjecting the spectator to be surrounded by field recordings of Igorot rituals and tradition, in hopes of affirming the lineage of Igorot immigrants and asserting the Igorot spirit within the collective memory.
