Embroidery: Embellishment and
Roots of Comfort

My project looks at the history of embroidery and argues that an important aspect of the tradition stems from the expectation for women to create comfort for others. While this varies across time and space, the woman’s job is often seen as comfort, both physically and emotionally, and beauty for those around her. Embroidery has served historically as a vehicle for this combination of self comfort, comfort of others, and physical adornment.

The creative component of the project is a decorative pillow case, hand made using natural dyes made from berries and adorned with green stitching to create an organic, repetitive pattern.
