Finding my voice — Finding freedom

Finding my voice — Finding freedom

Discovery, an active word that is constantly moving in and through our daily life. It is a word that has given me access to understanding the expression of my existence. Overtime I have found confidence in the complex yet attainable language of music and dance. Instead of solely relying on the abstract vocabulary found in improvisation, I embarked on the journey of storytelling through the art of choreographing both movement of the body and movement of the camera. This exploration has been stimulating in many respects since I’ve used three different mediums (sound, video, and dance) in order to create the bridge between getting my story across to the other.

This dance piece processes through the entanglement of my inner consciousness in regards to the feeling of fear, uncertainty, and being confined, to finally surrendering to the idea of freedom. Over the years the quiet and stillness became two of my closest friends who would call for a time of reflection and observation but also a time of isolation and insecurity. In order to address this visually I created two sections, one indoors and one outdoors. The beginning scene (in doors) holds most of the choreography. I made use of a mirror and minimal lightning to reflect and create shadows. This is symbolic to how shining a light on thoughts through reflection of the self exposes the darkness that is otherwise hidden. The second part of this piece is held outdoors based on improvisation and instinct. I process thought in real time, amplifying the feeling of uncertainty but finding freedom in surrendering the need to be controlled by my thoughts. Even though all three mediums required their own process, they pulled from one another in order to create one piece. My main aim is to evoke emotion and contemplation within anyone who watches it, questioning their own ideas of what freedom looks and feels like.
