Autophonix is the primary alias of Brooklyn-based producer, performance artist and DJ, Ryan Natsis. Since releasing their debut EP Buzzkill over a year ago, they have been gathering sounds for a full length album, and now with the collaborative element of workshopping accompanying the creative process. In being supported by other artists they’ve found a different level of accountability to not only progress down the creative path, but to be able to explain and show others what that creative path looks like. Working with other artists is an exercise in communication and translation, as folks of all mediums are tasked with sharing their work in a varied group. This more academic process of creativity is different than how the artist works, and added a structure that is still being adjusted to. The balance between bursts of creative energy and creative blocks adds another level of correspondence the artist must do to make sure they stay on schedule. In this group with other Brooklyn based creatives, this album is going through the metamorphoses of becoming a finished piece crafted by the discussions of young artists. Working in electronic mediums is rooted in their identity as a queer experimental artist and is influenced by DIY principles and surrealist horror to create their sonic witchcraft. This album draws from the genre of horror in a way that deepens the emotion of the tracks, utilizing fearful sounds as a sonic mechanism for translating the feelings chaos brought about by experiencing mental illness. Their work has accompanied documentaries, short films, art shows, and nightlife events, with the intention to nurture introspection about queer and trans experience, to be exemplified by Autophonix II, a sentimental haunted house for the ears to be released Summer 2021.
