Key strengths:
Singing opportunities have been a success this year - Singing assemblies, a choir performance to the school, Christmas Carol Concert and a wonderful Y6 production of Oliver.
Children's enjoyment of music is clear in the pupil voice. 83% gave music a 3/5 or above.
Composing lessons in Year 5 and 6 have started to be implemented - Year 6 left this year with a better understanding of the foundations of composing and recording such as using bandlab and a musical stave.
Recorders were introduced in the Summer Term of Year 3 - this is an ongoing process. However, the pupil voice showed how having instruments in Year 3 led to children naming music as their favourite subject.
Connections have been made with different secondary schools including Croxley Danes (One World performance) and Rickmansworth (Team teaching in Year 5).
Key Areas for Development:
Main area of development:
Across two different surveys, the main piece of feedback from children has been that there isn't enough music lessons. This year, the main priority is to slim down the music curriculum to make it more achievable across each year group.
Other areas of development:
Performing
Implement other ways for children to perform. As the new 'Oracy' lead, this will take priority to make sure children, who would like the opportunity, are able to perform.
Composing
Continuing to develop more composing/performing opportunities in Year 3. This may be through recorders but may need further research into alternative opportunities.
Continue to develop a more secure understanding of the technical elements to composing. This could also be through using bandlab across all year groups.
Assessment Data Headlines
Strengths
The average number of ARE or above children for each year group was roughly 78% in 2022-2023.
The average number of ARE or above children across the school is roughly 82% this academic year. The main area for development has been composing, especially in Year 5 and 6 as these areas were not covered in such detail last year.
Area of development:
Composing and Performing skills are the usually where children are not age related. This year will have a focus on composing and performing across the school.
Surveys Headlines
Staff Feedback form
Strength
Compared to conversations about this topic last year, more of the music curriculum is now being taught across the school.
Area of development
The music curriculum needs to be further slimmed down to make it more achievable across all four year groups.
Pupil Feedback form
Strengths
83% of children gave music a 3/5 or above. 11 children mentioned that it was their favourite subject.
Many children in Years 3 and 4 have mentioned instruments. Cornets and recorders were both very popular this year.
Areas of Development
Most children who said that music was their least favourite mentioned it was due to the lessons being short or not enough of them. This has led me to further research how to fit more music into the curriculum.
Learning Walks
Strengths
Due to the supportive TALT system put in place, I have managed to watch numerous music lessons across the school.
Year 5 and 6 now have are consistently teaching all four skills in every term. The children have been engaged and thriving in lessons, especially when learning composition on Bandlab as well as teaching the musical stave.
Year 4 has a new cornet teacher and they have been learning a range of different genres of music. They also have performed as a chorus.
Area of Development:
Year 3’s implementation of recorders is an ongoing process that will need further investigating in this upcoming year.
Pupil Book Study
As music is not usually found in books, a pupil book study can be difficult. However, in April, three children from each class filled out a pupil survey. Here are the headlines:
Strengths
Two thirds of the children said they loved music at Little Green.
Children gave responses such as calling music 'fun, creative and interactive'.
Children gave lots of examples of music lessons they have enjoyed including learning the recorder and learning how to record musical notes.
Area of development
The main piece of feedback for how to make music better was to have more lessons. This has furthered my want to research how to fit more music into the curriculum.
