Intent/Action plan:
Review the current behaviour and culture in school
Review the current ethos of the school: Community well-being, attitude to learning and powerful knowledge. Survey all stakeholders for their views and what words they would consider most appropriate for the school culture.
Research the 'Establish, maintain, restore' approach in relation to our current practice.
Review how PSHE and RE fit into behaviour and culture.
Create a new behaviour and culture policy after collecting and evaluating ideas from all stakeholders.
Embed a change of culture in the school and allow time for these changes to have an impact.
Implementation
Autumn Term 2022
The children reviewed the behaviour and culture of the school. The results were positive and shared children's views of the school.
These questions shared a positive view on the behaviour at Little Green. Using a scale helped children to identify a true picture, rather than saying whether behaviour was good or bad.
It is encouraging that 95.7% of children believe that support is put in place for poor behaviour.
From this, it was identified that many children may not know about the 'Ready to Learn' room and what support is put in place.
Update: All children in the school have now visited the 'Ready to Learn' room during Explorer afternoons in Feeling Good Week.
Initially, we thought that this question would be clear for the children. However, we were disappointed that some children did not feel safe. After further discussions, we found out that it wasn't that the children didn't feel safe, they were worried about accidents or falling over in the playground.
Action: Explain to the children what safe means as part of an Assembly.
As part of SLT meetings, we have started discussions on how we would like the children to leave school in Year 6. This discussion will form our culture changes throughout the year.
Autumn Term 2022
Parent workshops were introduced in the Autumn Term to support parents in transition from Year 2 to Year 3. In previous years, we have held meetings where parents listened to the information. Now, the parents come in and learning is modelled with the children. The children have the opportunity to take their parents back to the classroom and learn together. This workshop was positively received and they are beginning to be rolled out in Years 4, 5 and 6.
This year, the children have started to run many whole school competitions. This has encouraged the children to think for a purpose and have a go as well as supporting them to take a risk. The competitions have allowed them to think about the school environment and how it can be changed or improved. They have developed confidence by speaking in front of the whole school and making decisions based on their peers' feedback.
Some examples of competitions run so far: Flag making competition; reading badge competition for Little Green's reading scheme; poetry about school ethos; banner making; story writing
The kindness competition - As part of 'Feeling Good' week, 2 girls from Year 5 ran a kindness competition. This supported children to recognise different ways of being kind and try to complete all of them everyday.
Year 6 have created their student parliament, where the children can share their ideas and be heard. The year 6 children had the opportunity to share their campaigns with the other children around the school and the year 3, 4 and 5 children had the opportunity to vote for their favourite candidate.
Parliament meetings are held regularly for the children to feedback and share their ideas about changes for the school. Lots of ideas and plans have been shared this year. One topic has been about school dinners and if there could be an option of a larger portion size. The student parliament met with the kitchen staff to discuss this and although portion sizes could not be increased, the children understood the meaning behind this.
It was recognised that many letters at the beginning of the school year can be overwhelming for some parents and this can lead to important information being missed. Each year group now has their own communication page on the school website which can be referred to at any time.
Spring Term 2023
With our current school ethos having been used for 5 years, we are reviewing the wording 'community well-being', 'attitude to learning' and 'powerful knowledge'.
At parents consultation evening, we surveyed the parents on their thoughts on what their perfect school's ethos would be.
