Little Green’s provision of RSE is to provide age-appropriate education to our pupils about healthy relationships, including friendships and families, as well as about physical development, puberty, and reproduction.
RSE at Little Green is designed to help children develop a positive attitude towards their bodies, to understand how their bodies may change as they grow and develop, and to learn about the importance of personal hygiene and staying safe and healthy. The curriculum also covers topics such as boundaries, respecting differences; and some precursor consent.
The ultimate goal of RSE provision at Little Green is to help our pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need to make informed choices and to navigate relationships and their own sexual health as they progress through adolescence and into adulthood
Curriculum: At Little Green, we develop a comprehensive curriculum using government-recommended third parties, such as the PSHE Association. This covers the relevant topics and is appropriate for the age and stage of development of the children.
Consult with stakeholders: We consult with parents, carers, and the wider school community to ensure that the RSE curriculum meets the needs and expectations of all stakeholders.
Train teachers: Teachers receive appropriate guidance and training to enable them to deliver the RSE curriculum confidently and sensitively.
Provide resources: At Little Green, we use age-appropriate resources, such as books, videos, and teaching aids, to support the delivery of the RSE curriculum.
Establish policies and procedures: We have established policies and procedures to ensure that RSE provision is delivered in a safe and supportive environment that respects the rights and beliefs of all children and families.
Evaluate and monitor: At Little Green, we regularly evaluate and monitor our RSE provision using current legislation and pedagogy to ensure that it remains relevant and effective, and to identify any areas for improvement.
Engage with parents and carers: We actively engage with parents and carers throughout the implementation process and beyond, to ensure that they are informed and involved in their child's RSE education.
By following these steps, Little Green effectively implements RSE and supports our pupils in developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to navigate relationships and their own sexual health.
At Little Green, we recognise that behaviours may vary depending on the individual pupil and their personal development, but some general indicators of the impact of the teaching of RSE would be:
Respectful Interactions: The child would display respectful behaviors towards others, including their peers, teachers, and family members. They would understand the importance of treating others with kindness, empathy, and fairness.
Effective Communication: They would demonstrate effective communication skills, such as active listening, expressing their thoughts and feelings clearly, and understanding the importance of open and honest dialogue in building healthy relationships.
Setting and Respecting Boundaries: The child would understand the concept of personal boundaries and would be able to set and respect their own boundaries, as well as recognise and respect the boundaries of others. They would understand the importance of seeking consent and not pressuring or coercing others into any actions or behaviors.
Understanding and Respecting Differences: They would demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of individual differences, such as differences in family structures, gender identity, and cultural backgrounds. They would show respect and inclusivity towards others, regardless of their differences.
Safety Consciousness: The child would display awareness of personal safety, both offline and online. They would know how to identify and respond to potentially unsafe situations, seek help when needed, and understand the importance of privacy and responsible online behavior.
Healthy Decision-Making: They would make informed and responsible decisions regarding their health and well-being. This could include making healthy food choices, engaging in regular physical activity, practicing good personal hygiene, and avoiding harmful substances.
Positive Attitudes towards Puberty: The child would exhibit a positive and informed attitude towards the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. They would have a basic understanding of these changes and be able to discuss them openly and without embarrassment
