During this time, we unfortunately were not able to continue learning how to sing or play musical instruments safely. Instead, we learnt how to appreciate music by listening and discussing what you hear.
The music appreciation assemblies meant that children were still able to listen and appreciate music from various genres and also throughout history.
We had different themes throughout to give us a range of music. The different themes were:
Autumn 1: New beginnings, Happiness, Perseverance
Autumn 2: Colours and Christmas Carols
Spring 1: Different genres of music including pop, rock, reggae and more
Spring 2: Decades of music 1940s onwards
Summer 1: Desert island discs - suggestions from teachers
Summer 2: Desert island discs - suggestions from children
The children loved being able to discuss the elements but also be given the opportunity to suggest a music of their choice.
In this Autumn term, some year groups have started using music appreciation as part of their music lessons so far this year.
For example in Year 6, they looked at their theme of 'Having a Voice' and listened to songs with this theme.
Also, in Year 5, the children looked at their theme of 'Chocolate' and discussed different songs related to this theme.
A member of 5R in 2020 made a video explaining all the different elements of music that we discuss during music appreciation. He wanted to share his knowledge and understanding with his class.
