Subject overview: In Geography this year, the curriculum (see curriculum coverage below for individual year groups) has focused on using the 'Skills Trackers' (see link) in line with the 'National Curriculum' based through a themed topic.
Key strengths: Positive attitude towards Geography across the school, a range of activities planned in each Year group. The use of intent and narration has deepened children's understanding of the task and is used purposefully. The children are able to go through their book confidently recognise the Geography work they have produced across the year. Great cross- curricular links to History and Spanish. Children of all ability were able to explain what they had covered and that is worth a celebration! Thank you to everyone at Little Greens.
Key Areas for Development: Children to deepen an understanding of what Geography is and the use of more topic books will further aid this. Ensure there is consistency in books across year groups . To ensure the lessons highlight the geographical skills and this is clear in the intent. To implement different strategies to develop mapping skills through: computing, art so that it is hands on and not just relaying on using atlases. Overall, to develop Geographical skills. The use of learning organisers or fact sheets that contain key topic words and essential facts that children need to learn by the end of the unit and for the children to refer (to develop subject knowledge). To ensure there is enough evidence of Geography across all Year groups. Finally, to look at ways to develop geographical skills and fieldwork across all year groups.

Strengths and Areas to investigate further:
There is a positive attitude to Geography across the school. Children are able to understand what geography looks like in their year group. The children would like more challenges and more creative learning (especially with mapping skills). We need to investigate the use of fieldwork and develop use of Geographical skills and the intent of the lesson to focus on this.

In schools, the teaching of geography gives pupils an understanding of the world around them, its environments, places near and far, and the processes that create and affect them.[footnote 2] Former US president Barack Obama commented:[footnote 3]
The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exist across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together ( taken from the OFsted report on Geography).
In 2022, Ofsted will be publishing a report on the quality of geography curriculums taught in schools. We will gather the evidence for this through subject ‘deep dives’ during inspections under the EIF.
