Intent:
At Little Green, we have taught Spanish for many years but recognised that the children were not necessarily enjoying learning the language and it was difficult for some teachers. Therefore, our intent is to build children’s enthusiasm for learning Languages that they can use in the future as well as at Secondary school.
Implementation:
We researched, through the school parliament, feelings towards learning Spanish and if the children would like to change the language from Spanish to French.
The school parliament gave some passionate arguments both for and against changing the language from Spanish to French.
Then, we investigated with staff and whether they would like to change the language. All 8 respondents asked to change the language.
The overwhelming majority voted for teaching French. This was because staff felt more comfortable to teach French and had more experience with the language, whether that was a GCSE or A Level or having previous knowledge. It was decided, for consistency and progress across one language, that Spanish would continue to be taught in Years 5 and 6 and Year 3 and 4 would start their journey with learning French.
French Planning and Delivery in Year 3 and 4
For each unit in French, it is planned using a mixtures of Language Angels and Miss Marriott's planning. Where there is links to Language Angels, there are voice files to use for pronunciation. Where there isn't Miss Marriott records the language for non-specialists so that they are familiar.
Impact:
After introducing French to Years 3 and 4 in September, in Assembly, we found out how they were feeling about learning French so far. The children have enjoyed outdoor learning, by using games to learn new vocabulary and role play to introduce themselves.
Speaking and Listening
Our first topic in French was greetings. For the first few weeks, children learnt some questions and responses for how to introduce themselves. Using prompts, we created some role plays to introduce ourselves to each other.
The children in Year 3 and 4 have been enthusiastic about learning French with one child saying 'My friend can order an ice cream now when he goes to France in the summer'. They have developed skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing and they have been using a vocabulary and exercise book to record their learning in and use it as a reference point when revisiting prior learning. Progress in reading and writing is monitored through vocabulary books and speaking and listening is through role play and echoing new vocabulary, using Language Angels and teacher knowledge. Some of these skills are recorded to show progress.
Assessment is through:
Looking at pupils’ work, checking for new language
Observing how they use speaking and listening skills in French
Talking to them what new language they have learnt
Using narrations
To link with the criteria of children making substantial progress in one language, Year 5 and 6 have continued learning Spanish through the Language Angels website. Please see the impact of this on the subjects global impact page (Link at the top of this page).
