Student Council Forum, Student Parliament
On Thursday 24th November 2022 we ran our first Eco Forum Training Day: A day full of inspirational environmental workshops and of sharing ideas for supporting the environment.
Please see Eco Forum website for more details and actions.
INTENT:
The goal of the School Partnership Programme is to provide excellent educational input, conservation awareness and action and an inspiring element of the children’s year. Year 5 will visit the 15-acre conservation facility at Cassiobury Farm & Fishery as a major part of the programme. As part of this exciting and collaborative relationship Year 5 have decided to use this as part of our 'Environment' topic taught in the Summer term.
As a launch to our topic, we will be visiting Cassiobury Farm & Fishery at the end of the Spring term where we will focus our learning on the animals found in the continent of South America.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Linked closely with our learning about the environment in Year 5, Cassiobury Farm keep a breeding troupe of Cotton Top Tamarins as part of the European Endangered Breeding Programme (EEP). Cotton Top's are IUCN Critically Endangered in the wild and in conjunction they support Pryecto Titi, which is a small conservation organisation, based in South America, focused solely of the protection of Cotton Top Tamarins in the wild. Their primary work is:
1) Protecting, restoring and connecting fragmented forest.
2) Continuing long term field research.
3) Engaging the local communities to encourage greater interest in the forest and the cotton-top tamarin.
One really interesting project they are running is to create the first community-funded rainforest. Essentially you buy an acre, which you can name, in the 965 acre reserve they are trying to protect for Cotton Top Tamarins. The fund raising level for this is $1,250 for a full acre of rainforest. Our aim is for Year 5 to develop, in conjunction with their learning fundraising opportunities that enable us to buy an acre (or more) of this rainforest to support the conservation of Cotton Top Tamarins. This is a world's first and quite an interesting and visible impact concept they have developed.
