DNA Models

Learning EXPERIenCE

Through this project students used their creative thinking skills to build a 3D model of DNA.  After they created their model, students from 2 different teacher’s classes combined in the library to analyze the effectiveness of the different models.  When the students went to the library the librarian taught the students a lesson on how models are used in different applications.  The students participated in a discussion about how they have seen models in their lives outside of school and the importance of 3D models.  After the discussion, students chose 5 different models to analyze.  They did this in a modified gallery walk environment and had the option of working with their peers.  As students went around and analyzed the different models, they were looking for strengths and weaknesses in each of the models. The lessons concluded with the students participating in a class discussion about how the different types of models (technology, paper, and other supplies) could be used in other capacities.  Students attained knowledge of 3D Models using their creative thinking, critical thinking, and collaboration skills during a DNA model project.

What the students like about this experience:

"We liked creating the model, collaborating as a team, and learning about how DNA works and how to create a model.  We also liked looking over all of the different models and comparing them to each other to see what worked and what didn't work."

What the teachers likes about this experience:

"I want my students to be skilled in critical thinking and clear communication as both will be needed in the workplace and in life in general. My favorite part was watching students who were initially hesitant about the assignment become engaged in the actual model building and/or the evaluation of other models.  I particularly enjoyed talking with the students who were willing to critique the teacher models."
