Grades: 10-12
Class: Spanish IV
DLIS: Knowledge Constructor, Creative Communicator
In the World Languages Department at Freeman High School, we implement a variety of student-centered tools and media to facilitate learning. The core objective in all of our activities is student engagement with the target language that is contextualized, culturally relevant and creative.
Using the tool Book Creator, students collaborated on a project that enabled them to bring their creativity to life, interact with the target language, and explore the cultural relevance of the telenovela in Latine culture. The project design facilitates student interaction and collaboration in a way that brings the target language to life. The inclusion of visuals along with the written word fosters long-lasting language acquisition and created an opportunity for students to work on collaborative photo editing and storyboard design.
Through Book Creator, students explored the projects of their peers, allowing students to explore other storyboards and interact with the target language at their own pace. In the target language, students provided positive feedback for their peers and compared their creative ideas and telenovela themes.
"Becoming #LifeReady is important to us because being prepared for the “real world”, including college, jobs, and anything else that crosses our path, is extremely necessary to be successful. Being able to build these skills now, at an early age, is going to be especially helpful in the future. We developed teamwork and communication skills, all while speaking and writing in Spanish, which is not our native language. Our favorite part of creating this project was being able to take full creative liberty over the entirety of the story."

"We loved watching students collaborate and think creatively while using authentic target language."
