ASCA Mindsets & Beliefs
B-LS 2. Creative approach to learning, tasks and problem solving
B-SS 7. Leadership and teamwork skills to work effectively in diverse groups
Through play Kindergarten and 2nd grade students worked collaboratively to explore different career fields. Students visit 6 centers during a 2 week lesson, each center represents a career they are learning about. Kindergarten careers are: Hair Stylist, Carpenter, Veterinarian, Pastry Chef, Auto Mechanic and Architect. Second grade students are exploring what it would be like to be a(n): Florist, Paleontologist, Architect, Engineer, Entomologist and Veterinarian. Some centers require collaboration to complete the final project while others give students a chance to use their own creative thinking skills and imagination.
“I liked being a paleontologist because we could find fossils then learn about the dinosaurs.”
“The centers were a fun way to learn about careers.”
“They give my students a chance to explore new career paths in an engaging and interactive way.”
“The Career Centers our Kindergarten students are using during School Counseling Lessons provide the best learning environment to tap into our students’ prior knowledge as well as give them experiences they need in order to learn about a variety of careers. Offering them hands-on experiences, helps them construct knowledge using tools, vocabulary, and different scenarios to learn about each job naturally. Students are very engaged in the career centers and practice oral language, social, and academic skills at the same time. It has been a delight to see how engrossed my class is with the Career Centers. They are able to problem solve and come up with unique situations. For example, in the hair stylist center, students were able to practice being a store owner, use and share hairdresser tools, and create and design their own hair styles.”
