Creating a community closet for students in need is an excellent example of life ready learning because it teaches students the life skills such as empathy, collaboration and problem solving. Empathy is developed by understanding the struggles of others and taking action to help them. The 8th grade EFE students recognized this need in our school community. The students then collaborated with one another and high school students from The ACE Center at Hermitage to work on problem solving and project management. Problem solving is a critical skill as students have identified the needs, come up with a solution, and implemented the solution. These skills are crucial for success in life and work and have been developed through this process of creating and maintaining a community closet. Students have learned the importance of giving back to their community and creating a positive impact. Students have utilized the growth mindset to dream big with the cougar community closet and to achieve big outcomes through the utilization of the project management tools their high school mentors taught them.
This helped our students to be more #LifeReady because they were required to communicate and collaborate with several partners both inside and outside of school to bring together a comprehensive plan for our community closet. - Andy Givens
