Our annual summer course, the Joan Oates Institute, offers hands-on workshops that will teach you how to engage and empower students through creative and experiential methods, reflection, and collaboration.
We are now recruiting the HCPS 2023-2024 JOIFIL team!
Open to teachers, specialists, staff, coaches, and administrators from all levels and content areas.
What is JOIFIL? The Joan Oates Institute for Integrated Learning, or "joyful," is a unique year-long professional development opportunity. A team of 2-4 educators will receive training, planning, and project implementation support.
How is this free?! All HCPS educators are members of the PIA consortium and participate at no cost thanks to funding from an REB Award.
What will this look like?
TRAINING: Educators attend the Joan Oates Institute (JOI), a 5-day summer course in-person at the University of Richmond from June 26-30, worth 50 PD hours. Breakfast, lunch, and all materials are included. In the fall, PIA facilitates a custom PD session for staff at the team's school.
PLANNING: During the institute, the team has time dedicated to planning a community-integrated school project with visiting experts and peers from around the region. At the end of the summer and into the fall, PIA helps educators develop a comprehensive, project-specific plan aligned to standards and classroom needs.
IMPLEMENTATION: During the school year, the educators bring the project into their school. PIA supports visiting artists and experts providing hands-on, interdisciplinary learning experiences for students.
How do I sign up? Interested educators should email Art Specialist Mike Kalafatis at mckalafatis@henrico.k12.va.us with the names of 2-4 team members by April 14, 2023. The final team will receive registration information shortly after.
