An Achievable Dream Certified Secondary Academy has taken root within the former Highland Springs High School facility located on Oak Avenue in Henrico County. Hence the nickname “The Oak.” Prior to the grand opening on January 17, 2023, students participated in research on the concept of “An Achievable Dream” and the role they have in making The Oak a successful academic complex. This learning experience engaged students in exploring Achievable Dream schools throughout the country, learning about the roots of their school, becoming knowledgeable about the goals, mission, and vision of the school, and learning about the faculty. Students actively listened to the school's administrator share knowledge about the school's inception, read information about the school from the Henrico Newsletter, and gathered data from online resources. Through extended day and the "What it takes" activities, students learn and practice skills to actively and professionally communicate in the world. As a result, students are equipped to articulate the goals, mission, and purpose of An Achievable Dream to others.
"Learning about my school makes me confident in sharing information about it with my friends who attend other schools. Since An Achievable Dream is so new, students and teachers at other schools don’t know what it is. Now, that I understand how my school began and the role it plays in the school system, I am proud to share my understanding with others." ~ Ka'nya H.
"I learned to be a better communicator as I participated in this project. I discovered information about my school that I didn't know, and I can talk to my friends about my school." ~Aaron G.
I appreciate and am grateful for the resources and opportunities to teach skills that go beyond the classroom. Working at "An Achievable Dream affords me these opportunities. ~D. Tuck
At "An Achievable Dream," we have a unique opportunity, as educators, to expose students to learning experiences that broaden their horizons. One of the ways that I have been able to grow, as a teacher and also help students grow as learners, is by providing activities specific to communication and collaboration. ~ J. Hyman
In the initial stage of the project, students review taxonomy while practicing communication and social skills.
Small group of students work to develop communication skills, social skills, and research skills.
Students develop research skills as they gather information on AADAS.
Students continue research on AADAS and prepare to share this information with the class.
Thank you to the innovators that helped make this experience possible:
