Learning EXPERIenCE

A kindergarten and 5th grade class collaborated on a project that reflected student agency, community outreach, collaboration, and communication. Each student chose their top 3 community helpers and was paired up with another student. Pairs researched, completed a STEAM challenge to create a tool that occupation uses, and interviewed an expert in the field to hear first-hand experiences in helping the community. Students then collaborated on an exhibit to showcase their learning to their families and invited the experts they interviewed to join in on the learning experience.

What the student(s) like about this experience:

"I think that it helped a lot with my communication skills because I had to interview someone I didn't know. I also think it helped my global citizenship skills, because i learned a lot about farmers and my community."

"It has helped me so much not only as a student but as a human being because I have gotten better at talking in front of audiences and researching and thinking creatively."

What the teachers like about this experience:

"It was really rewarding to see students collaborating across grade levels with the same goals in mind. I was really proud of the 5th grade students for really taking on a leadership role with their kindergarten partners."

"The culminating event gave our community the opportunity to see what is happening in our building every day. I think both families and students appreciated the experience and learning from one another."
