Grade: 7: English 7, USII, and ESL
AASL: Inquire and Curate
DLIS: Empowered Learner, Creative Communicator, Global Collaborator
The overarching theme of our learning experience, An American Journey, was Global Citizenship. Our goal was to educate students about the diversity of their peers and community at BMS by providing them an opportunity to see life experiences from other students’ perspectives and connect that to the past.
Using the Henrico Learner Profile, we created a cross-curricular experience connecting empathy to Global Citizenship, Quality Character, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, and Communication skills.
As Life Ready Learners, these students are now better able to contribute to solutions that address the needs of a broader community by building global awareness and demonstrating empathy, compassion, and respect for others through knowledge and understanding.
"I became more brave, more strong. I become more thoughtful about my conversations with someone. More understanding and giving perspective to others.
"I developed better communication skills and more confidence "
"People are willing to listen. Being on camera allowed me to open up. It helped me practice communicating with others."
"My favorite part of this learning experience was getting to see my students connect with students they hadn’t met before and also learn more about a very relevant and important topic". ~ A. Suit
"It was so inspiring to see our immigrant students open up about their experiences. Our interviewers were so kind and understanding. It was just awesome seeing our students really connect and grow." ~E. Kurth
