LEARNING EXPERIENCE

4th graders read a book and conducted research in library to learn about the negative impacts of plastic bags on our environment. After brainstorming ideas of how to help our county, students decided to inform the school of the issue, create new products from plastic bags (bracelets, necklaces, keychains) , encourage people to buy their products, and then donate the proceeds to Clean Virginia Waterways, an organization dedicated to protecting our environment. Students have created flyers, a google slides presentation, and recorded videos with QR codes to demonstrate their knowledge and enlighten people of negative impacts caused by plastic bag litter. Students are also partnering with Keep Henrico Beautiful to distribute reusable grocery bags.

What student(s) like about this experience:

"I loved the Henrico 21 project. It made me feel like I was actually helping our community. My favorite part was selling and making plastic bag bracelets. In our project we were global citizens and collaborators by using harmful plastic bags and making bracelets. Now I feel like I have helped the Earth with my class."

What Ms. Stockton likes about this experience:

"I really enjoyed participating in the Henrico 21 learning experience this year. It was a great opportunity to work with my students to think out of the box and take our learning further. Creating experiences for my students to learn #LifeReady skills along with our state standards was a humbling experience. Every teacher wants their students to take away skills that will help them be a successful member of our society. With our #trash2treasure project, my students practiced being collaborators with their peers in their research and creation of products. They also collaborated with a coordinator from Keep Henrico Beautiful to create a flier and organize another project within our school to distribute reusable bags. During PTA nights, my students were able to communicate the purpose of our project and persuade guests to use reusable grocery bags and to purchase their bracelets created from plastic bags. Being a quality character and global citizen were our focus with creating bracelets to help Clean Virginia Waterways with a monetary donation to help our local environment. Overall, I feel my students will take away skills that they will use for the rest of their lives."
