5th grade - Science & Music
DLIS: Innovative Designer
Our 5th grade students learned about circuits and how they are used in their everyday lives. In music class, they collaborated in groups to develop a musical selection using instruments that were available. The students used their knowledge of the music scale to compose their own melody. Then, they brainstormed how to create a closed circuit using different conductors which allowed the Makey Makey to make sounds. Using their conductors, they were able to play their musical selection “Makey-ing Music Fun”!
If I want to become a scientist, a music teacher, or even a singer I can use what I learned from this experience to do that. It was challenging creating the circuit for the first time, but now I think it’s easy. My favorite part of the experience was creating the melody because I really love music!

It was so much fun to connect music to science! Our Baker musicians took their knowledge of how circuits work and combined it with a keyboard musical composition using the Makey Makey piano app. It was so much fun to see the creativity and electricity flow as they collaborated to create their musical masterpieces. It was an awesome learning experience for all and an activity I will use in the future.
