Broadway Theater, Scandal of 1920

Post date: Dec 20, 2010 12:22:2 AM

I was recently contacted by Robert Trebor, who played the memorable role of "Schwarz" in Scandal of 1920. Remember him as the poor guy who kept trying to talk some sense into George White but kept falling on deaf ears?

Mr. Trebor had the following to say about his experience with Young Indy:

"I don't have any photos, but I have lots of fond memories. For instance I was there during the time Lucas came down to actually pick up the camera and shoot some of the dance sequences. Also, the writer was a Brit, and got some of the theatre terminology wrong when referring to the American stage....using such British terms as "stalls" and "beginners" for "orchestra seats"and "opening cast members."

He was also kind enough to reveal the shooting location of the Broadway theater, one of the locations I have exhausted myself trying to track down:

"The interiors were shot in The Thalian Hall built in 1858, right in downtown Wilmington (I believe the theatre was connected to the City Hall). It was my home for a month in August of 1992."

Address:

Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts

310 Chestnut Street

Wilmington, NC

However, during the final performance of the show, a few shots are mixed in that are obviously the interior of the National Theatre in Prague:

I've also finally deciphered exactly what is going on with the exterior shot of the theater:

If you study it close enough, it is actually the front steps of the Rudolfinum Concert Hall in Prague. This location was used several times throughout the show.

Address:

Alsovo Nabrezi 12

Prague 1

Czech Republic

This illustrates what portion was matte-painted on (in red) to the live action shot.

Another one to check off the list!

Special thanks to Mr. Trebor for sharing his memories of the shoot and helping to solve this mystery once and for all!
